Grant Offers CDL Opportunity
Six seniors took a big step today meeting with Talon Logistics about the opportunity to train and gain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) during the school day this semester.
Thanks to a reVISION Action Grant through the Nebraska Department of Education, seven ESU2 Districts can offer this course to seniors at no cost to students. Tekamah-Herman students will take part in on-line daily coursework and are allowed four hours on Wednesdays to go to Fremont for the hands-on learning experience.
Talon Logistics is a post-secondary career school program focusing on transportation and logistics education. Alec and Ashley Windeshausen explained that Talon Logistics started about two years ago in Fremont. They are responsible for training over 100 adult drivers who wished to gain their CDL. Ashley explains they were aware of the need for employees throughout the industry. Their target audience is young rural adults who have an interest in truck driving. Ashley and Alec contacted ESU2 in Fremont and a partnership formed. Upon successful completion of this program, students will receive a Talon certificate and a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. This is intended to equip them with the essential skills and knowledge for a thriving career in the industry. All learning materials, instruction, and exams are covered with the grant (approximately $4,000 per student).
Our six senior participants include: Gabe Stock, Matt Olson, Alex Braniff, Tate Pruess, Levi Blackford, and Lucas Gilbert (driver’s seat). There will be an additional class offered second semester for more students. Each of the young men were asked about this program and here is what they had to say. Tate Pruess thought the opportunity that was presented sounded like a good skill to gain during high school. Levi Blackford adds that it is something that will always come in handy to have, providing back-up or side employment opportunities. Gabe Stock is interested in hauling cattle, but not interested in getting his school bus driver endorsement. Alex Braniff didn’t quite know what he is destined to haul, but he is certain that he will own a Peterbilt 379 that is white with baby blue accents. Matt Olson is looking forward to sharing the experience with his grandpa who currently drives a dump truck. Finally, Lucas Gilbert thinks a CDL will come in handy with a paycheck, beautiful scenery, and plenty of challenges.
Good luck gentlemen and drive safe!
